Cambridge Online - Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)
What is an EPQ?
EPQ stands for Extended Project Qualification. It’s a Level 3 qualification, which involves researching a topic of personal interest, resulting in a 5,000-word dissertation or a shorter report accompanied by an artefact, such as an artwork or performance. The project helps students develop valuable skills, such as research, time management, and independent study, which are essential for university and future careers. It is graded from A* to E and is worth up to 28 UCAS points, with higher grades obtaining more. Students typically take an EPQ alongside their A-level courses, helping support them in their future opportunities.
Why are EPQs a great opportunity for students?
EPQs are excellent preparation for university and are perfect for studying alongside A-Levels to boost university applications by achieving further points and highlighting additional skills. These qualifications also provide hands-on experience with the independent research and study skills that are essential for further education and the workplace. It also gives students the freedom to explore a subject they feel passionate about in greater depth, alongside demonstrating initiative to universities and employers that they can manage a large project and work independently. Students will also build critical skills such as project management, critical thinking, and independent working.
What topic can I choose for my EPQ?
You can choose almost any topic for your EPQ, but it is recommended to choose something you are genuinely passionate about, that links to your future career plans, and has enough available research material. As mentioned in a blog post from UCAS, it is a good idea to ask yourself these questions first: "What do I want to get out of an EPQ?", "What do I like?", and "What makes a good EPQ?". For additional information and guidance about EPQ courses and the qualification itself, please find the Pearson Edexcel guide below.
